For eight years the West Virginia Shakespeare Festival (WVSHAKES), produced by Alchemy Theatre has been a testament to Shakespeare's enduring legacy with programming that makes his brilliance accessible to young and old learners alike.
However, recent developments have placed the future of WVSHAKES in jeopardy. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has slashed funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Grants from the West Virginia Humanities Council that we have been awarded, even from last year, are being rescinded.
We have lost 75% of our funding for WVSHAKES for 2025.
